Cooling a fairway by syringing
Above average temperatures across the midwest and mid atlantic states have reaked havoc on many golf courses. The loss of turf on golf courses has been caused by excessive temperatures, rainfall and heavy disease pressure.
Although it is challenging to manage turf under these conditions, below are a few rules most golf course superintendents follow to minimize turf loss on greens, tees and fairways:
- Cooling the turf by syringing (see picture above) during the hottest part of the day
- Mowing in the morning only
- Controlling cart traffic with directional signs or stakes
- Venting greens (see June 14th post)
- Good Drainage...remove surface water immediately after an afternoon downpour to prevent scalding
